Employers of small businesses that worry about boosting employee productivity can use progressive discipline to alert employees about improving behavior and work habits.
This post comes courtesy of Global Human Resources Outsourcing and was originally written by HR consultant Ronnie Perez:
First, in an appropriate, safe atmosphere the employee needs to be informed of what the problem is and what efforts can be taken to rectify the situation.
Second, the employee needs to be given the opportunity to fix the problem within a reasonable time line.
Lastly, the employee needs to be aware of the consequences if he or she does not show noticeable improvement.
Perez writes that companies need to have a progressive discipline policy in place. He states that “at-will” employment, where the employee may quit at any time or the employer may fire at any time, is a moot point even during a probationary period.
Perez says employers must show cause for the termination if they end up being sued during the probationary period.
