Super Bowl Commercials - Why Bother Watching?

Marketing promotions to get you noticed in a crowded marketplace are endless. And we stand on the eve of what has become a once a year anticipated visual blitz – Super Bowl commercials. Personally, I can let someone else watch the commercials.

By the way, feel free to read my Super Bowl predictions.

I want a commercial to entertain me at any time of the year.

In my opinion, Super Bowl commercials now work against themselves because I envision agency staff sitting around, tossing ideas, generating story boards to come up with a concept that’s staged just for the sake of being funny or clever. It’s like they’re yelling out, “hey, look at me! I’m being funny!” Or, “hey, look at this commercial. Damn! Aren’t we being clever?” I guess I especially feel that way about the Go, Daddy commercials.

It’s like the little kid standing on the edge of the diving board yelling to his mom in the shallow end of the pool “Look at me, mommy” before he dives. She looks, laughs and say’s that’s great. Then he does it again, and again and again . . . it gets tiring. Finally, she turns around and yells out "jump or shut up!"

Okay, I don't expect a mom to really say that . . . I just took creative license.

Or is my frustration with Super Bowl commercials a reflection of how I feel when thinking about some female executive, munching on brie cheese and wiping a sip of red wine off her lips during the game – and when there’s a break in the action she says – “ooh, let’s see this commercial.”

Let me go ask my therapist.

By the way, I wrote this article on Associated Content to say I didn't even think the
NFL playoffs should have been allowed to continue. I believe I have some really good reasons. Why don't you read it to see if you agree with me.

By the way,
Yahoo has given the Super Bowl commercials a head start by showing clips. That'll erase the element of surprise. Like Danica Patrick slowly unzipping her leather jacket to give a boost in traffic to Go, Daddy.

Hmm, I wonder if she would do that for my blog.

Ah, probably not.
