Business Tips: How to Get Started

Choose a niche market to get started as a small business.

Starbucks is a great brand name dominating the retail coffee industry. Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf is another major competitor.

But two men in Southern California decided they enjoyed roasting coffee and they knew people around Pasadena, California wanted an independent coffee roaster. David Ross and Ryan Hamlin roasted coffee as a hobby and turned it into a new business called Jameson Brown.

Jameson Brown isn't competing against Starbucks, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf or other major companies. They're finding customers who want hand roasted coffee where the temperature is carefully controlled. Their niche market is retail customers who want a friendly atmosphere, local pastry shops and restaurants in Pasadena, California, and customers on the Internet.

I stopped by their location and watched the roasting process in action.
