Business Innovation: What is it?

Business innovation: let's define it. The Random House directionary gives it a brief definition and simply states that innovation is doing something that seems new - or doing a task in a new way.

In my previous post, I quote from an article where the innovation is simply greeting a customer in a new way when he or she walks through the door.

Here are a few ways a business could be innovative:

#1 Assisting families who have 'special needs' children by giving them a flexible schedule.

#2 Offering a team approach to what was once a top-down approach to directives and performance reviews. An ad agency in Santa Monica, California, The Phelps Group, has continually developed the team concept for its clients and that's how they introduce their web site.

#3 Finding a new way to save money.

#4 Using blogs to communicate with customers and giving the CEO a chance to speak more directly to the public. More corporations are doing this, including IndyMac bank.

#5 Creating a new agency such as commercial space exploration.

As I think of other innovations, I'll write them down.

Are there ways you've been innovative? Perhaps not just in business, but also in the home or in a volunteer capacity.

Striving to do something new stimulates your own thinking and personal growth and it's good for those around you.

Here are some thoughts. Let's say you're in a dead end job or you simply don't like where you work and you want to get out as fast as you can. Why not think innovatively on behalf of where you currently are? You may not get heard or appreciated but so what? You may gain a new skill that will improve a future position.

Innovation is good for all of us.

What can you do in a new way that will improve upon what you once did?
