Free, Money-Saving Resource

We used the free, money-saving resource today as we took another step in landscaping our backyard on a budget.

Craigslist.

After all, your cash flow at home can take a hit buying flowers, rocks, and all the items to make a backyard paradise.

We're planning to lay a decomposed granite pathway. So we went online under "free" items and called a general contractor about 4 miles away who was getting rid of a couple of tons of decomposed granite.

We laid out a tarp in the back of our Chevy Astro van and dug quite a bit of dirt . . . probably up to $100 worth. It took 45 minutes for us to dig it into the van and it took me another 40 minutes or so to dig it out.

Here's another resource to help you save money buying plants for your yard:
retirement homes.

A local retirement home is undergoing a major renovation and we heard they were letting local residents come dig up plants, trees and more to haul off.

My wife dug up a dozen or more mature clumps of mondo grass. We saw at Armstrong nursery the same mondo grass we dug up for 0 dollars was selling for $ 9.99 per 4" pot. We could have spent $300 to $400 in mondo grass to fill in an area near our driveway.

Perhaps one would let you take some clippings and you can transplant those.

It's worth taking time to check free resources or make a quick phone call before shelling out all cash for your landscaping needs.

Have you ever gotten plants, rocks, or other landscaping items for free?

How did you do it and was it worth your time?

I invite you to share your tips here. Email me at deesm111@yahoo.com and I'll be glad to post them and link to your blog or web site if you have one.
